Residential Water Filtration Systems
Many homes have water systems connected to their own wells or communal water wells that supply a whole residential area. These systems are particularly at risk for various types of water contaminants and require adequate residential water filtration systems, but even if you’re home is hooked into a typical municipal water supply, you may feel it necessary to further purify your household tap water.
Individual residential water filtration generally consists of removing all the contaminants from household tap water, be it from water from a private well or water from the public system. Unlike the process for softening hard water, there are many ways to go about filtering tap water, and various devices and systems associated with water filtration based on the contaminants you might wish to eliminate.
Many advocates of municipal water treatment and those looking to discourage the use of bottled water tout the idea that water from the tap is completely safe and contaminant free, but local water treatment facilities are not always completely effective in ensuring all harmful substances are removed from the water supply before it is delivered to local residences.
As stated, residential water filtration systems come in a variety of shapes and sizes – from devices used for whole house filtration to simple devices that fit onto your faucet. You can even buy pitchers with built in water filters so you can have fresh, clean water waiting for you in the refrigerator or on your dining room table.
Reverse osmosis is the only truly effective means for ensuring you and your family are completely safe from harmful water contaminants. Substances such as chloride, nitrates, sodium, and other total dissolved solids (TDS) can only truly be filtered and purified with reverse osmosis. Fluoride and the possible presence of prescription medications as reported recently in the media are also all removed through the reverse osmosis process.
Reverse osmosis systems can be a bit pricey and run in the 3 to 4 thousand-dollar range for purchase. Under the sink filtering systems prove very cost effective and provide a very high level of tap water safety if your only concern is your drinking water. If you want the water in your showers, washing machines, and other faucets to have filtered water as well, whole house water purifier and filter systems are another economical solution that provide ample drinking water safety. The presence of cleaner water for your entire house based on a whole house system can increase the life of your water based appliances as well.
There are even more economical choices out there as well with all their own strengths and weaknesses. There are pitcher filters, good for keeping around fresh water. Pitcher water filters filter the water as you pour water into the pitcher. Similar systems exist for keeping water on the go for hiking and camping. Faucet filters are good for sinks and bathing areas, and inline filters are also available that fit directly into your homes plumbing lines.
If you are truly concerned with contaminants in your residential water system, the safest bet is to consult with a professional who can guide you through the testing process. At the very least, purchase a home test kit so you can get some sort of base-line for your household water purity.
